Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic Therapy in Ventura: Uncover Patterns, Deepen Self-Awareness, and Transform from the Inside Out

Are You Feeling Stuck in Patterns You Can’t Quite Explain?

Do you find yourself repeating the same painful dynamics in your relationships — even though part of you knows they aren’t serving you?

Do you struggle with anxiety, shame, or low self-worth that doesn’t seem to match your current life situation?

Have you worked hard to “fix” your challenges with mindfulness, productivity, or logic, only to find yourself back in the same emotional place again?

Maybe you feel overwhelmed by emotion — or disconnected from it altogether.

You might have a sense that something deeper is going on. That your past is quietly shaping your present. That the roots of your struggles are beneath the surface — not something to be solved with a quick fix.

Many clients who come to therapy with these questions are smart, insightful, and high-functioning — and yet still feel lost when it comes to their inner emotional world. They don’t always have the words for what’s wrong, but they know something isn’t quite right.

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone — and you’re in the right place.

You’re Not Broken. Your Symptoms Make Sense.

It’s incredibly common to feel confused by your own emotional life. After all, so much of our inner world is shaped by early experiences — many of which we can’t even recall.

Psychodynamic therapy is a powerful and time-tested approach for understanding why you feel and behave the way you do. It explores the unconscious roots of patterns that began in childhood and helps you build insight into how these dynamics play out in the present.

The issues you’re struggling with — whether anxiety, depression, self-doubt, relationship conflict, or numbness — often have deep roots. They’re not evidence that you’re “too sensitive” or “too much.” They’re signs that something within you wants to be heard, understood, and healed.

And the good news is: with the right support, this is entirely possible.

What Is Psychodynamic Therapy?

Psychodynamic therapy is a depth-oriented approach that helps you understand how your unconscious mind — shaped by your earliest relationships — influences your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors today.

Rather than focusing on symptom management alone, psychodynamic therapy invites you to explore:

         •       Core emotional patterns developed in childhood

         •       Attachment styles and relational dynamics

         •       Inner conflicts that fuel anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem

         •       Repeated themes in relationships and career

         •       The ways you may unconsciously protect yourself from emotional pain

In a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship, we work to bring these patterns into conscious awareness — not to assign blame, but to foster understanding and compassion. From there, real transformation can take root.

This type of therapy is especially helpful for people who:

         •       Have tried short-term or solution-focused therapy but want to go deeper

         •       Experience chronic anxiety, shame, or depression

         •       Grew up in emotionally immature, chaotic, or neglectful households

         •       Struggle with self-criticism or people-pleasing

         •       Feel disconnected from their desires, identity, or voice

         •       Want more satisfying, authentic relationships — but don’t know how to get there

The Power of the Therapeutic Relationship

Relational psychodynamic therapy views the therapist-client relationship as a healing space — not just a place to talk, but a living, emotional connection that mirrors the patterns you may experience in your life outside of therapy.

When past wounds are activated in the therapeutic relationship, we don’t avoid them — we explore them together, with curiosity and care. Over time, this allows you to rewrite the emotional templates that have shaped your life.

This process is deeply transformative. It’s not about being given tools from the outside — it’s about growing your inner capacity to feel, think, connect, and live more fully.

My Approach: A Relational, Insight-Oriented, and Compassionate Process

As a psychodynamic therapist practicing in Ventura, I take a collaborative, attuned, and relational approach to this work.

I don’t believe in cookie-cutter therapy. I’m not here to pathologize you, offer quick fixes, or sit in silence while you guess what I’m thinking.

Instead, we’ll co-create a space where your inner world is held with nuance and respect. I will offer reflections, ask thoughtful questions, and help you connect the dots between your present struggles and your early experiences — all at a pace that feels safe and grounded.

We might explore:

         •       How your family and relationship dynamics shaped your sense of self

         •       What you had to do to feel loved or safe growing up

         •       The roles you took on — caretaker, achiever, avoider, rebel — and how they show up now

         •       Where you learned to disconnect from emotion, and why that might have been adaptive at the time

         •       What vulnerability means to you, and how intimacy feels in your body

Psychodynamic therapy is not always linear. It’s a rich, unfolding process that invites curiosity, presence, and honesty. And when done with care, it can be profoundly life-changing.

Specialized Training in Depth-Oriented Psychotherapy

I bring a deep foundation in psychodynamic theory, relational work, and depth psychology to every session. My training includes:

         •       One- Year Psychoanalytic Therapy Certificate Program at Newport Psychoanalytic Institute – a rigorous program rooted in contemporary psychoanalysis, attachment theory, and developmental neuroscience.

         •       One-Year Intensive Psychotherapy Program at the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity (IPSS) in New York – a cutting-edge, relationally focused program integrating intersubjectivity, affect regulation, and modern psychodynamic theory.

         •       One-Year Training at the Los Angeles Institute & Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS) – emphasizing modern analytic and object-relations perspectives with a strong focus on clinical application.

These programs have shaped my ability to listen deeply, hold complexity, and work with unconscious material in ways that are both grounded and transformative.

Why Choose Psychodynamic Therapy?

While some therapies focus on surface-level behavior change, psychodynamic therapy gets to the root of the issue. It’s not about symptom suppression — it’s about lasting transformation.

Clients often report:

         •       Greater emotional resilience and self-understanding

         •       Freedom from self-sabotaging patterns

         •       Increased capacity for intimacy and vulnerability

         •       A more grounded sense of identity

         •       Healing from early relational trauma

         •       Reduced anxiety, depression, and shame

In short, you begin to feel more like yourself — often for the first time.

This isn’t magic. It’s the result of being deeply seen and known, perhaps more fully than has ever felt safe before.

Common Concerns About Starting Psychodynamic Therapy

  •  “What if I don’t know what to say?”

That’s completely okay — you don’t need to come in with a plan. Part of our work is creating space for the unsayable to be said. I’ll help guide the process so that even silence can feel meaningful.

  •  “Will it take years to see results?”

Psychodynamic therapy is often longer-term, but many clients notice shifts within the first few months — especially in self-awareness, emotional regulation, and relational clarity. Deep transformation takes time, but the journey begins right away.

  •  “Is this just about blaming my parents?”

Not at all. We’ll explore early relationships not to assign blame, but to understand your emotional world and the adaptive strategies you developed. Many of those strategies were brilliant — they helped you survive. Now we’ll ask: are they still serving you?

Why Clients Work With Me

Clients often say they feel deeply understood in our work together. They appreciate the emotional depth, attunement, and gentle challenge I bring to the process. I’m not afraid to go into the harder places with you — but I do so with care, curiosity, and trust in your inner resilience.

As someone trained in both contemporary and relational psychodynamic approaches, I bring a rare blend of theoretical grounding and relational presence to the work. I’m fluent in the language of unconscious dynamics — but more importantly, I help you find your own language for your experience.
